MONTEREY, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf had a solid opening 18 holes at the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship, turning in a 5-under 283 to finish the first round in a tie for third and just two strokes behind BYU for the lead. The underclassmen duo of
J.P. Odland and
Emil Nielsen carded a 2-under 70 and are tied for ninth individually.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Nielsen opened the day with a bang, carding an eagle on the opening hole, a 548-yard par five. He tallied three birdies on the back nine.
- Odland tallied four birdies to offset a pair of bogeys on the front nine. The sophomore has now shot under par in four consecutive rounds dating back to the Broncos' last event.
- Jack Hayden, a freshman, had an up and down day with six birdies to counter three bogeys and one double bogey to finish the round tied for 14th at 1-under 71.
- Calder Overfelt shot even par and is tied for 19th while freshman Matthew Robles, playing as an individual, was 1-over to finish in a tie for 27th.
- BYU (281) finished one shot ahead of Sam Houston State (282) for the early lead. Santa Clara is tied with fellow WCC foe Pacific for third and is three shots ahead of Seattle (286) in fifth.
- Sam Houston's Bret Grey leads the field of 84 after carding a 6-under 66.
