MONTEREY, Calif. - Santa Clara freshman men's golfer
Matthew Robles secured his first collegiate top-five finish at the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship on Wednesday after carding a 2-over 74 in the final round to conclude the event 3-under 213 and tie for fifth. The Broncos also tied for fifth as a team, matching host-Saint Mary's at 7-over 871.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Robles is the fourth Bronco to tally a top-five finish this fall joining J.P. Odland (1st), Jack Hayden (1st) and Emil Nielsen (4th).
- Robles, who was playing as an individual, tied BYU's Cole Ponich and Pacific's Deitrek Gill for fifth. Pacific's Carlos Astiazaran ran away from the field to win medalist honors by three strokes at 8-under 208.
- Four of the six Broncos playing the field shot a 74 for the day.
- Calder Overfelt tied for 15th at 1-over 217. It is his fifth career top-20 finish and second of the season.
- Odland also tallied a top-20 finish with a tie for 19th at 2-over 218. It is his team-best third top-20 finish of the season and eighth of his young career.
- Pacific turned in by-far the lowest final round tally among the field of 14 with a 13-under 275 to climb three places in the standings and win the title by five strokes over BYU (860) at 9-under 855. Sam Houston (865) edged out LMU (866) for third while the Broncos and Gaels rounded out the top five.
