Broncos Drop Hard Fought Battle to Pepperdine

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's volleyball team fell to the Pepperdine Waves 3-1 on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Leavey Center. The Broncos won the first set before dropping the next three. Alayna Crabtree led the Broncos with 15 kills, her 12th game of the season in double figures, and Lexi Trapani led the Broncos with 16 digs, recording her second straight double-double, adding 10 assists. Macy Hinshaw also tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 12 digs and 12 assists.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first set went back-and-forth until Pepperdine (10-8, 7-1) took a 15-13 lead heading into the media timeout. The Broncos answered, scoring three in a row to take a 17-16 lead capped off by a kill from Alayna Crabtree. Pepperdine scored four in a row to take a 23-20 lead, but the Broncos rallied, scoring the final five points of the set capped off by a Lauren Grover kill to take set one, 25-23.
  • Pepperdine jumped out to a 5-2 lead to open set two. The Broncos battled back, scoring four straight points capped off by a Grace Flanagan kill to take a 7-6 lead. Pepperdine scored five straight points to take a 16-10 lead. The Broncos again battled back, scoring five straight points of their own including back-to-back aces from Layla Truitt to cut the lead to 16-15, forcing a Pepperdine timeout.
  • Out of the timeout, Pepperdine scored three in a row to go up 19-15, leading to a Broncos timeout. A kill by Alayna Crabtree capped off three straight Santa Clara points to cut the lead to 23-22, however, Pepperdine scored the final two points to take set two, 25-22.
  • Set three went neck-and-neck until Pepperdine scored three straight to take a 12-9 lead. The Broncos answered, scoring three straight of their own to tie up the set at 12. An ace from Nive Tuileta capped off another three point rally for the Broncos to take a 15-13 lead heading into the media timeout. Pepperdine scored three straight out of the timeout to go up 16-15. Back-to-back kills from Layla Truitt put the Broncos up 21-20, but Pepperdine scored the final five points to take set three 25-21.
  • Set four was tight again until the Broncos scored three in a row to take a 13-9 lead, forcing a Pepperdine timeout. Pepperdine answered, scoring five points in a row to tie the match at 14. Pepperdine scored three in a row to take a 17-15 lead, leading to a Santa Clara timeout. The Waves scored five in a row to take a 23-17 lead, but the Broncos scored three in a row to cut the lead to 24-21, before Pepperdine took the set 25-21, and the match 3-1.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Three Broncos ended the match with double figures in kills: Alayna Crabtree (15), Elena Radeff (11), and Layla Truitt (10).
  • Lexi Trapani led the Broncos with 16 digs, recording her second double-double of the season, adding 10 assists.
  • Macy Hinshaw had her fifth double-double of the season with 12 digs and 12 assists.
