Baseball Comes Back to Win Home Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Eight starters got hits, six tallied at least one RBI and five of them scored two or more runs.

Second week of the season and the Santa Clara University baseball team's offense is still clicking.

And the pitching is finding its way, too.

The Broncos scored double-digit runs with double-digit hits for the third straight game, then got seven innings of scoreless relief from the bullpen to earn their second come-from-behind victory in their home opener, a 13-4 series-opening win over UMBC at Stephen Schott Stadium.

The biggest hit of the night came off the bat of Santa Clara's Malcom Williams. It was Williams' only hit Friday, but his bases loaded triple down the right field line in the fifth inning cleared the bases and put the Broncos (2-2) on top for good at 6-4. Williams tied a career high with a game-leading four RBIs. Dylan Joyce, Jordan Lewis and Michael O'Hara each drove in two, with Joyce and O'Hara logging multi-hit games.

Brayden Dotoli (1-0) and Blake Hammond combined for seven shutout frames after the Retrievers (0-1) had scored four runs (three earned) in the first two innings and led 4-2. Dotoli threw three no-hit, shutout innings from the third through the fifth to earn his first victory as a Bronco, striking out four along the way. Blake Hammond earned his first save of the year with four shutout innings to close out the game. He tied a career high with nine strikeouts, including striking out six across the seventh and eighth innings.

UMBC, playing in its first game of 2024, scored two runs in the first (one earned) and two in the second to lead, 4-1. The Retrievers had four hits in the second, including back-to-back RBI singles by Anthony Swenda and Leewood Molessa. UMBC starter was solid through the first four innings, only allowing one run on three hits and striking out six.

But he ran into trouble to start the fifth. JonJon Berring drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error, then scored on Coleman Brigman's RBI single. That chased Johnson and brought in freshman reliever Logan Wiley (0-1), who promptly hit Efrain Manzo, walked Joyce and then surrendered Williams' go-ahead triple.

Santa Clara created havoc on the basepaths Friday, drawing 10 walks and stealing nine bases – their most in a single game over the past 14 seasons (since 2011). Brigman and Manzo both scored three runs, while Berring tied a career high with three steals.

The series continues Saturday with Santa Clara left-hander Brandon Gomez taking on UMBC lefty Jayden Shertel. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
