MARICOPA, Ariz. - Freshman golfer
Kelsey Kim carded a 1-under 71 on Friday to lead Santa Clara women's golf on the opening day of the Golfweek NGI. The Broncos finished the day 5-over 293 at the par 72, 6,295 yard Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club and find themselves in sole possession of third place with two rounds to play.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Broncos had an excellent day across the board, but found it difficult to navigate the par 4 18th. Four of the five players bogeyed or double bogeyed, resulting in a slight slip in the standings. Despite that, Santa Clara is still just four shots back from UNCW (289) for the lead. Rutgers is three strokes ahead at 3-over 290.
- Kim, the WCC Freshman of the Year, was the lone Bronco to make par on No. 18 and capped her day with three birdie putts against a pair of bogeys. She is currently in a five-way tie for fourth and just two strokes behind Chattanooga's Violeta Fernandez for the individual lead (69).
- Santa Clara tallied 12 total birdies as a unit. Both Inara Sharma and Audrey Brust tied Kim with three apiece.
- Sharma turned an even par 72 and is just a shot behind Kim in a crowded tie for ninth.
- Brust is two strokes behind Sharma in a tie for 15th at 2-over 74. Patricia Garre Munoz (76) and Meva Schmit (77) are tied for 21st and 30th, respectively.
