MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Santa Clara men's golf couldn't have asked for a better start to the 2024 fall season. The Broncos shot a 9-under 279 in the opening round of the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate on Sunday at the Grande Dunes Golf Club and hold a one-stroke lead ahead of Monday's second round. Individually,
J.P. Odland sits in second place and just one stroke behind the leader with a 5-under 67.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- A whopping 11 Broncos are among the 87-player field. In addition to returners Odland, Calder Overfelt, Joey Hayden, Cameron Kaiser and Jolo Magcalayo, six newcomers made their Bronco debuts in the opening round - Alvaro Baumgart, Emil Nielson, Matt Robles, Tyler Gerace, Jack Hayden and Kasper Verwers.
- Eight of the 11 Broncos shot par or better. In addition to Odland's 67, Joey Hayden turned in a 3-under 69 and is in tie for fifth while Overfelt (70), Kaiser (70), Gerace (70), Nielsen (71) and Robles (71) all shot under par. Verwers shot an even 72.
- Santa Clara tallied 45 birdies in total, as well as a pair of eagles on the par-5 13th courtesy of Odland and Robles.
- Odland carded five birdies and an eagle as part of his 5-under 67. Hayden, Kaiser and Gerace each tallied six birdies, Overfelt and Nielsen finish with five, Verwers had four and Robles turned in three in addition to his eagle.
- Santa Clara leads Coastal Carolina and Campbell (280) by one stroke. Elon's Jack Wieler holds a one-stroke advantage over Odland at 6-under 66.
