Broncos Win Pacific Invite Title, Compete at Lakefront Invite

McCoy Brooks finished second overall Friday at the Pacific Invitational to lead the Broncos to the team title.
The Santa Clara University men's cross country team won a team title and ran in an ultra-competitive meet on the same day Friday, as one Broncos' squad took home the trophy at the Pacific Invitational in Lodi, Calif., while another group competed in the morning at the 46th annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational in Chicago.

at PACIFIC INVITATIONAL
  • Santa Clara landed three runners in the top-four and five in the top-11, piling up 28 points to claim the team championship at Friday evening's Pacific Invitational, hosted at Micke Grove Golf Course.

  • McCoy Brooks spearheaded SCU's victory with a runner-up finish, clocking 24:56.1 over the 8-kilometer course. Right on his heels was Kaden Helder in third at 25:04.9. Jack Tobin, competing unattached, crossed in fourth with a 25:13.0 effort. Evan Charkut provided the Broncos' third scoring mark by securing seventh in 25:32.3.

  • James Estrella followed in 11th with a 25:53.2 showing, while James Ponzio completed the scoring five by coming through 15th in 26:03.0. The pack stayed impressively tight — only 66.9 seconds separated SCU's top-five finishers. Andrew Ho (20th, 26:19.3) and Eric Ortega-Gammill (21st, 26:19.9) rounded out the top-seven.

at SEAN EARL LAKEFRONT INVITATIONAL
  • Senior Daniel Trampe set the tone for Santa Clara in the Tom Cooney men's 8-kilometer championship race Friday morning, part of Loyola Chicago's 46th annual Lakefront Invitational at Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course on Chicago's North Side. He dipped under 25 minutes for the first time this season, placing 60th in 24:46.85.

  • Freshman Will Carroll, senior Daniel Vaca, and sophomore Liam Papavasiliou formed a tight trio as the Broncos' second through fourth runners, separated by just 16.7 seconds. Carroll paced the group in 79th at 25:16.49, Vaca followed in 87th with a 25:29.68, and Papavasiliou came in 89th at 25:33.19.

  • Freshman Zafer Courcelle completed the scoring group in 100th with a 26:19.24 performance — his second straight meet inside SCU's top-five. Kyle Berg came through right behind him in 101st at 26:21.82, and Jack Kyle closed out the top-seven in 105th with a 26:42.56 run.

  • The men's championship featured three nationally ranked programs, including eventual winner No. 7 Wisconsin, who tallied 71 points. Santa Clara took 14th with 385 points. Louisville's Elsingi Kipruto captured the individual crown in 23:14.44.
COMING UP
  • The Broncos will split squads again on Oct. 18, sending a group to the Pre-Nationals meet hosted by Missouri in Columbia, Mo., and running another squad at its own Bronco Invitational at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale, Calif.
