SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's volleyball defeated the Pepperdine Waves for the first time since Nov. 9, 2017 in four sets on Saturday afternoon. The Broncos dropped the first set, before winning the next three.
Cate Shanahan had a monster night with a career high 26 kills, becoming the first Bronco to tally 25 or more kills since
Layla Truitt on Nov. 10, 2022.
Selin Aslayan also added a career high 17 kills, hitting .467.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Four straight Pepperdine points gave them a 7-4 lead, but the Broncos battled back with a three point rally of their own to regain the lead 14-13 after a kill by Grace Flanagan. Another three straight from the Waves made it 19-15, but the Broncos answered with four points in a row to cut the lead to 21-20. A kill from Layla Truitt tied it at 23, but back-to-back points from Pepperdine ended set one.
- The Broncos (6-8, 1-2) scored the first six points of set two capped off by a kill from Cate Shanahan. However, five straight Waves points cut the Bronco lead to 12-9. Three straight for the Broncos gave them more insurance holding onto a 16-11 lead. A service ace from Hailey Newell made it 22-17, and a Pepperine blocking error gave the Broncos set two, 25-20.
- Pepperdine (8-6, 2-1) scored three straight to take an 8-5 lead, but the Broncos scored four in a row to take the lead, 11-10. A kill by Shanahan put the Broncos up 18-16, but three straight Pepperdine points made it 19-18. Three straight Bronco points after back-to-back kills from Morgan Hayes put Santa Clara up 21-19, and a kill from Shanahan ended the set in favor of the Broncos, 25-22.
- Three straight Bronco points put them up 13-10, but Pepperdine scored four straight to take a 20-18 lead. The Broncos answered with three straight of their own to retake the lead 22-21, and another three straight to take the match 25-22.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Cate Shanahan had a career high 26 kills, becoming the first Bronco to tally 25 or more kills since Layla Truitt on Nov. 10, 2022.
- Selin Aslayan also added a career high 17 kills, hitting .467.
- Macy Hinshaw had her sixth double-double of the season with 49 assists and 10 digs.
- Layla Truitt added 11 kills for her ninth game of the season in double figures.
- Lexi Trapani had her 13th game of the season in double figures with 20 digs.
- The Broncos reached 70 kills for the first time since Nov. 10, 2022 (77 at Gonzaga).
- This is the third time this season the Broncos have 60 or more assists.
- This the first time the Broncos have beat Pepperdine since Nov. 9, 2017.
