SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's volleyball swept the USF Dons in three sets Thursday night at the Leavey Center in front of their largest crowd this season on Alumni Day. The Broncos saw little resistance winning the sets 25-16, 25-14, and 25-21.
Layla Truitt led the Broncos with 12 kills, hitting .611, the second time she has hit over .600 this season.
Macy Hinshaw led the Broncos with 34 assists, her 16th game of the season in double figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Broncos (8-8, 3-2) scored six-of seven points to take an 8-3 lead capped off by an ace from Cate Shanahan. Three straight Santa Clara points made it 11-4, and another three straight made it 23-11. However, the Dons scored five straight to cut the lead to 23-16. A kill from Layla Truitt and a bad set from the Dons gave SCU set one 25-16.
- A Morgan Hayes kill capped four straight points for the Broncos to go up 5-1, forcing a USF timeout. The Broncos scored six of seven again to go up 13-4 after another Truitt kill. Four straight Bronco points put them up 23-10, and a kill from Truitt again gave the Broncos set two 25-14.
- Three straight points for the Dons (2-13, 0-5) put them ahead 8-5, but the Broncos answered with three straight of their own to tie things up. Back-to-back service aces from Ashlynn Reilly gave the Broncos a 13-11 lead. The Dons tied it up again at 16, but three straight points for the Broncos capped off by a kill from Morgan Hayes put them ahead 19-16. Back-to-back points from the Dons cut the lead to 23-2, but a kill from Cate Shanahan and a huge block from Grace Flanagan and Amy Veargason sealed the win for the Broncos, 25-21.
