SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's volleyball defeated the Portland Pilots in five sets Saturday for their fourth straight win and sixth in the last seven games. The Broncos matched their conference win total from last season (7) with eight games still to play in the regular season.
Layla Truitt and
Cate Shanahan led the Broncos with 17 kills each, their team leading 15th game of the season in double figures each, while
Macy Hinshaw had her 11th double double of the season with a career high 54 assists and 15 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Broncos (12-9, 7-3) scored the first five points of the first set capped off by a kill from Layla Truitt, and later 11-2 after a kill from Morgan Hayes. Five of the next six points went to the Broncos and three straight made it 21-9 Broncos. The Pilots scored four straight, but it was too late as the Broncos took set one, 25-15, after a kill from Cate Shanahan.
- Portland (10-12, 5-6) took a 4-1 lead to open set two, but the Broncos scored four of the next five to tie it up at six. Seven straight Bronco points put them ahead 19-13 after back-to-back aces from Lexi Trapani, and later 22-15 after another kill from Shanahan. Portland again put together a late rally with four straight points, but a kill from Truitt and a Portland error gave the Broncos set two, 25-20.
- Four straight points from the Pilots put them up 5-2, but the Broncos answered, scoring three straight to tie it up. The Pilots took a 15-12 lead, and later 21-19. Santa Clara cut the lead to 21-20, but the Pilots scored four straight to take set three 25-20.
- The Pilots carried the momentum into set four, jumping out to a 7-4 lead to open set four, however, an ace by Flanagan capped three straight Bronco points to tie it up. Three straight from the Pilots put them up 15-12, and later 21-18. However, three straight Bronco points tied it at 22. A massive kill from Truitt made it 24-23, but three straight Pilot points gave them a 27-25 set four win.
- The Pilots took a 5-1 lead to open set five, and later 8-4 heading into the media timeout. Six straight Bronco points gave them the lead 10-8 after back-to-back service aces from Alyssa Eimer. Back-to-back Portland points tied it at 13, but back-to-back kills from Shanahan gave the Broncos the win, 15-13.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Macy Hinshaw had her 11th double double of the season with a career high 54 assists and 15 digs.
- Layla Truitt eclipsed her season high leading the Broncos with 17 kills, her 15th game of the season in double figures, tying the team lead with Shanahan.
