SAN FRANCISCO - Santa Clara women's volleyball defeated the San Francisco Dons in straight sets Saturday for their fifth straight win and seventh in the last eight games. The Broncos faced little resistance from the Dons, scoring the last nine points of the game en route to a 3-0 sweep.
Layla Truitt led the Broncos with 11 kills, her team leading 16th game of the season in double figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Three straight points for the Broncos (13-9, 8-3) put them ahead 10-7 capped off by a kill from Layla Truitt, and another kill from Truitt extended the lead to 13-8. Four straight points capped off by a kill from Cate Shanahan made it 17-9, and Truitt finished off the first set giving the Broncos set one, 25-19.
- An ace by Lexi Trapani capped off four straight to open the second set for the Broncos, and a kill from Macy Hinshaw made it 8-4. USF battled back to tie the match at 11, but the Broncos answered, scoring three straight after another kill from Shanahan. A kill from Lexi Trapani extended the Broncos lead to 21-17, and an attacking error from USF gave the Broncos set two, 25-21.
- The Dons (3-19, 1-11) jumped out to an 11-3 lead to open set three in a must win game for them. However, four straight Bronco points cut the lead to 12-8, and later 18-17 after a kill from Tia Kapihe. Down by one, the Broncos rallied to score the final nine points of the game, taking set three 25-18 and sweeping the Dons 3-0.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Layla Truitt led the Broncos with 11 kills, her team leading 16th game of the season in double figures.
- Lexi Trapani led the Broncos with 15 digs, her 19th game of the season in double digits.
- Macy Hinshaw tallied 36 assists, her 22nd straight game in double figures.
- Cate Shanahan had nine kills and nine digs, just one shy in each category of her sixth double double of the year.
- Morgan Hayes also added nine kills, one shy of her 12th gam of the season in double figures.
- The Broncos have now won three straight against the Dons and four of the last five.
- The win marks the Broncos fifth straight their most in a row since winning five straight to open the 2023 season.
- This is the Broncos eighth conference win this season their most since 2022.
