CORVALLIS, Ore. - Santa Clara women's volleyball lost a tough three set battle to Oregon State Thursday. With the loss, the Broncos fall to fifth place in the West Coast Conference (WCC) standings with three games remaining in the regular season.
Layla Truitt led the way with 10 kills, her team leading 18th game of the season in double figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Oregon State (18-8, 12-4) jumped out to a 7-3 lead to open set one, but the Broncos responded with three straight points capped off by a kill from Layla Truitt to tie it up. Another four in a row from the Beavers made it 12-8, but the Broncos rallied again as a kill from Selin Aslayan cut the lead to one, 19-18.
- A kill from Morgan Hayes capped three straight points as Santa Clara took a 22-21 lead, but Oregon State jumped out ahead 23-22 and scored the final two points of set one, earning the 25-23 victory.
- The Beavers again dominated set two taking a 7-2 lead, and later 14-9. However, Santa Clara (15-11, 10-5) again fought back, cutting the lead to one, 14-13, after an ace from
Aslayan capped four straight points. The Beavers responded with four straight from the home side, taking the lead 19-14. From there it was smooth sailing as the Beavers took the set 25-16.
- Set three went back-and-forth until four straight Beaver points put them up two, and three straight made it 18-13. Three straight from the Broncos cut it 21-18 after back-to-back aces from Aslayan. A kill from Morgan Hayes made it 24-20, but Oregon State closed it out with a kill from Maeli Cormier, ending the set 25-20.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Layla Truitt led the way with 10 kills, her team leading 18th game of the season in double figures.
- Cate Shanahan added nine kills and eight digs, one kill shy of tying Truitt for the team lead in double figure games.
- Lexi Trapani totaled 15 digs, her 22nd game of the season in double digits.
- Macy Hinshaw was one dig shy of her 12th double-double of the season, finishing with 34 assists and nine digs.
- The Broncos fall to 6-6 overall against Oregon State.
