NAPA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf shot under the minimum in both rounds on the opening day of the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational, finishing the day in second and just seven strokes off the lead after turning in a 7-under 282-287--569 at the par 72, 6,859-yard Silverado CC & Resort. A trio of Broncos finished the day inside the top 10 individually with Alvaro Muller leading the way in a tie for seventh.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Muller had nine combined birdies over the two rounds, opening the day with five as part of a 3-under 69 opening round. He followed up with a 1-over 73 to finish the day 2-under 142 for a three-way tie for seventh.
- Calder Overfelt and J.P. Odland tied each other for 10th at 1-under 143. Overfelt carded the best round of his career in the opening round, shooting a tournament-low 7-under 65 that saw the Newport Beach native tally eight birdies, six of which coming on the back nine. He turned in a 78 in the second round to finish 1-under in total.
- Odland shook off 2-over 74 start in the first round to tally a 3-under 69 in round No. 2, carding six birdies in route to climbing into a tie for 10th.
- Matt Robles shot even par at 74-70--144 to finish the day tied for 16th.
- Emil Nielsen is tied for 34th at 5-over 149 while Jack Hayden (12-over 156) is tied for 63rd as an individual.
- Japan's Tohoku Fukushi leads the Broncos by seven strokes for the team lead at 14-under 562. Tohoku Fukushi's Koichiro Furuse leads the field individually at 9-under 135.
