STANFORD, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf had an outstanding opening day on the links at the Goodwin, hosted by Stanford at the par 70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course, turning in a 2-under 278 to finish the day tied for fourth and just three strokes behind co-leaders No. 31 BYU and No. 32 Colorado. J.P. Odland continued his strong play by shooting a 3-under 67 to put himself just two strokes back of the individual lead and tied for third overall.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Santa Clara is one of just two unranked teams (Clemson) that finished the day inside the top 10 of the stacked 30-team field. The Broncos are currently ahead of 10 teams that are ranked in the top 40 of the Scoreboard Rankings.
- Odland, coming off a tie for fifth finish at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational, was outstanding in Thursday's round, tallying four birdies and carding just one bogey. He is in a six-way tie for third and just two strokes behind UCLA's Omar Morales (65) for the individual lead.
- Alvaro Muller and Matt Robles each shot even par and are tied for 30th while Emil Nielsen is just a stroke behind at 1-over 71 where he's tied for 48th.
- The Broncos are tied with No. 22 Pepperdine for fourth and was one of just seven teams the finished the day under par.
