STANFORD, Calif. - It is not how you start, but how you finish, and sophomore
J.P. Odland could not have finished his final round of the Goodwin any better. The Tiburon, Calif., native shook off a rough start to the day by carding a perfect back nine that included three birdies to climb back to the top of the leaderboard and finish in a five-way tie for co-medalist honors. It is Odland's second individual title of the season.
Santa Clara took a step back in the team standings, carding a 6-over 286 as a unit, but the Broncos still finished strong with a tie for fifth at 3-over 843. They were the only unranked team to finish inside the top 12 of the 30-team field, and finished with head-to-head victories over eight of those ranked programs.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Odland began the day tied for the lead, but quickly lost it and dropped down to as far as seventh after a rough front nine with two bogeys and a double bogey on the par 4 ninth.
- The back nine was a different story for Odland, as he made par on the first three holes and birdied three of the next four to climb right back to the top of the standings. He rolled in a short putt for par on the par 4 18th to clinch his spot alongside Utah's Gabriel Palacios, BYU's Peter Kim, Little Rock's Freddie Turnell and Northwestern's Daniel Svard for co-medalist honors.
- Odland also won co-medalist honors in Santa Clara's first event of the fall to open the season - the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate. It is the second win of his young career.
- Alvaro Muller shot 2-over 72 on Saturday to finish 2-over 212 in a tie for 26th while Matt Robles dropped to 55th after turning in a 7-over 77 for the round.
- Calder Overfelt had the best round of the day for the Broncos with an even-par 70.
- No. 15 UCLA shot 6-under 274 in the final round to run away from the field for the team title. The Bruins finished 11-under 829 to distance themselves from runner-up No. 32 Colorado (838).
