Broncos In Prime Position After First Day of WCC Championship

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf made history on the opening day of the 2025 West Coast Conference Championship, delivering a record-breaking performance at the par 72 Green Valley Country Club. The Broncos shot 11-under 277 in both the first and second rounds, breaking the program record for the lowest individual team round in WCC Championship history. Their 36-hole total of 22-under 554 has the team in third place and in great position ahead of Saturday's final round of stroke play.

Four of Santa Clara's five individuals shot under par over the two rounds with J.P. Odland leading the charge at an outstanding 9-under 135 to finish the day tied for third. Calder Overfelt and Alvaro Muller are also inside the top 10 in a tie for seventh at 6-under 138.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Odland opened the day 4-under 68 and followed with a 5-under 67 in the second round, which is tied for the second-lowest individual round at the WCC Championship in program history (Derek Ackerman - 2018 and Hayden Shieh - 2016/2017).
  • A native of Tiburon, Calif., Odland tallied 12 combined birdies over the two rounds, five of which coming as part of a bogey-free second round. He finds himself just two strokes behind co-leaders Mahanth Chirravuri (Pepperdine) and Connor Reis (Saint Mary's) at 11-under 133. The WCC Championship Individual Medalist will be crowned following the conclusion of stroke play on Saturday.
  • Right on Odland's heels are the duo of Overfelt and Muller three strokes behind at 6-under.
  • Overfelt shot a 2-under 70 in the opening round before rolling in five birdies to counter just one bogey as part of a 4-under 68 in the second round.
  • Muller did the inverse of what his teammate accomplished, shooting his 68 in the opening round and carding 2-under 70 in the second round.
  • Muller tallied an eagle on a different par five in each round. His first came on the opening hole of the back nine in the first round, and later that afternoon he did it again on No. 15.
  • Freshman Emil Nielsen also finished the day under par at 1-under 143. He tallied seven combined birdies for the day and is tied for 23rd.
  • Fellow freshman Matt Robles was 1-over 145 to round out the Bronco Five.
  • Santa Clara's 277 total in each round bested the previous school record of 7-under 281 set in the second round of the 2009 WCC Championship.
  • The Broncos tallied 47 birdies as a team, second only to day one leader No. 21 Pepperdine (51).
  • The Waves lead the 10-team field at 30-under 546 and hold a seven stroke lead over LMU (553). Santa Clara is just one stroke behind the Lions, three strokes ahead of fourth-place Saint Mary's (557) and 11 strokes better than San Francisco in fifth place at 11-under 565.
  • The top four teams at the end of Saturday's round will advance to Sunday's match play to determine the team champion.
