Broncos Shatter Program Record To Punch Ticket To Match Play at WCC Championship

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf did what they had do to hold steady in the final round of the 2025 WCC Championship. The Broncos held tight to their third-place position despite a late surge from Pacific, finishing the day 4-under 284 to complete stroke play with a 54-hole total of 26-under 838. With the third-place finish, Santa Clara punched their ticket to Sunday's match play to determine the 2025 WCC Team Champion. Their 26-under total shattered the Broncos' previous program record in the WCC Tournament of 4-under 860 set in 2021.

Sophomore J.P. Odland also held steady in the final round to finish in a tie for third at 12-under 204, breaking Hayden Shieh's previous program record in the WCC Championship of 11-under 205 set in 2017. Odland is just the sixth Bronco to ever finish inside the top three of the WCC Championship and the first such player since Shieh in 2017 when he tied for first place before falling in an individual playoff.

Santa Clara will be the three-seed in Sunday's match play and will take on No. 2 LMU in the semifinal round. The last two teams standing at the end of the semifinal round will play in the championship on Sunday afternoon.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Santa Clara shot 4-under 284 as a team and faced some serious pressure late from both Saint Mary's (282) and Pacific (271). Pacific in particular surged in the standings thanks to their 17-under showing in the round, tying the Gaels for fourth place at 839 - just one stroke behind the Broncos.
  • Odland was the final Bronco on the course and had two holes remaining in which he was tasked to make par at worst in order to avoid dropping back into a three-way tie with the Gaels and Tigers. The Tiburon, Calif., did not let the pressure get to him as he rolled in pars on both No. 8 and 9 to clinch third individually, third as a team and a spot in Championship Sunday.
  • Odland was 3-under 69 for the day, opening the morning with an eagle on the par 5 No. 10. He proceed to make par on the next five holes before a double bogey dropped him back to even. The sophomore bounced back nicely, however, making birdies on Nos. 18, 1 and 2, and closing the round with seven-consecutive pars.
  • Odland's 204 total also ranks inside the top-10 in program history regardless of tournament and ranks second-best in his personal career.
  • Alvaro Muller also tallied a top-10 finish with a tie for ninth at 8-under 68-70-70--208. He had four birdies as part of his 2-under 70 final round.
  • Calder Overfelt finished 5-under 211 to tie for 19th.
  • Emil Nielsen shot his second-straight even-par to finish 1-under 215 in a tie for 30th while Matt Robles was 4-over 220 to tie for 40th.
  • No. 21 Pepperdine won stroke play at 46-under 818 to claim the No. 1 seed for match play. The Waves' Mahanth Chirravuri (15-under 201) defeated his own teammate Kris Kuvaas in a playoff to win the 2025 WCC Championship individual title.
