Baseball Beats Pacific in Series Finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team got on the scoreboard early Sunday and rode a masterful starting pitching performance from Cooper Lanz to win the final game of its West Coast Conference series versus Pacific, 7-2, at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Three of Santa Clara's first four batters of the game singled, as the Broncos (16-23, 5-10 WCC) scored two runs in the first inning to go up, 2-0. Another rally in the third inning produced three more runs for Santa Clara and put it up, 5-0. Johnny Luetzow hit a two-run home run after a Dylan Joyce double, and Kai Cunningham slapped an RBI single through the left side of the infield. The Broncos had the potential to do more damage in the first three innings, stranding four runners, three in scoring position.

  • Cooper Lanz (3-1), meanwhile, had a career day on the mound for the Broncos. He was perfect through three innings while sitting on a 5-0 lead. He'd end up matching his career long outing by throwing six innings Sunday and setting a new career high with six strikeouts. Ironically, the last time he threw six innings in a game was also at Schott Stadium on April 6, 2023, but he was wearing a Pacific uniform and was throwing against the Broncos, earning a 3-1 victory in that game.

  • Lanz's only blemishes were two solo home runs, one to Brian McLellin to lead off the fourth and one to DJ Scott in the sixth, which made it 6-2. He only faced three over the minimum, and struck out the side in the second inning, with each batter going down swinging.

  • Four different Broncos posted multi-hit games. Luetzow finished 2 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Tate Medicoff went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Dylan Joyce went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored, and Ben Cleary went 2 for 4 with a run scored. The Tigers (18-26, 6-9 WCC) only had three hits all game, two of them the solo home runs from McLellin and Scott.

  • Andrew Habermann earned the first save of his career by throwing three shutout innings, only allowing one hit and not issuing any free passes. He struck out one while only facing two over the minimum while lowering his season ERA to 3.32.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 4: The Broncos had four extra-base hits Sunday (three doubles, one home run), marking the fourth consecutive game it has had at least four extra-base hits. Santa Clara is 6-5 this season in games it has collected at least four extra-base hits.
  • 5: Santa Clara had four multi-hit games in its lineup for the fifth time this season. It was the first time they had four multi-hit performances in a game since April 19 at LMU.

  • Santa Clara wraps up its home stand Tuesday with a single non-conference game versus Cal Poly. It then hits the road for a three-game WCC series at Portland starting Thursday. Fans can purchase tickets for Tuesday's game and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
