RENO, Nev. - It hasn't exactly been the smoothest of tournaments for Santa Clara or any of the other 13 teams in contention at the 2025 NCAA Reno Regional. After high winds pushed Monday's opening round back to the late afternoon, the teams were only able to get in 7-8 holes before the round was suspended for the day. The plan was to start early on Tuesday and finish out the first round before diving straight into the second round in hopes of completing all 36 holes ahead of Wednesday's final round. That also did not come to fruition as a surprise winter storm brought snowfall to the Sierra Nevada and delayed the start yet again. All teams finally teed off at noon on Tuesday and after completing the opening round around 4:00 p.m., they went straight into the second round. With only four hours of daylight remaining, however, the round was suspended due to darkness with most teams having just four to five holes remaining.
The plan now is to try again tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. PT with the completion of round No. 2 followed immediately by the final round to determine which five teams will advance to the 2025 National Championship in Carlsbad, Calif. However, with an early frost predicted for Wednesday morning, the teams may face yet another hurdle to overcome before it's all said and done.
But in the meantime, the first round is officially in the books, and Santa Clara men's golf shot 15-over 303 to put themselves in the discussion for one of those five coveted spots.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Rough playing conditions took its toil on each of the 14 teams, especially during Monday's portion of the first round as no one concluded the day better than 3-over par. No. 9 Virginia was the only team to find enough rhythm during Tuesday's portion to finish the round under par at 2-under 286.
- No. 45 Santa Clara was 15-over for the round, one stroke better than No. 16 Alabama and two strokes behind No. 21 Duke for seventh.
- J.P. Odland had an up and down round as he turned in five birdies, but also tallied three bogeys and a double bogey on the par-5 18th to finish the round even with a 72. The score was good for a tie for 11th.
- Three of Santa Clara's remaining four players (Emil Nielsen, Matt Robles and Alvaro Muller) tied each other for 40th at 5-over 77 while Calder Overfelt was tied for 53rd at 7-over 79.
- The Broncos were able to complete the majority of the second round before play was suspended due to darkness. Both Odland and Muller are unofficially 1-under par for the round and the team is currently in ninth place where they are right in the thick of a five-team battle for fifth place.
- Prior to the resumption of play on Wednesday, BYU (-5), Virginia (-4), Texas (E) and Mississippi State (+3) currently hold the top four spots. Cal, who has shot 11-under par in the second round so far, is currently in fifth at 9-over, but San Diego (+12), GCU (+13), Sam Houston (+14) and the Broncos (+15) are all within striking distance, especially given the unpredictable playing conditions.
