RENO, Nev. - One of the most accomplished seasons in the history of Santa Clara men's golf officially came to an end on Wednesday. Despite battling through the elements, the Broncos were unable to secure one of the NCAA Reno Regional's five spots reserved for the national championship, finishing with a 54-hole total of 29-over 893 at the par 72 Montreaux Golf and Country Club to finish in 12th place.
No. 33 BYU won the regional at 15-under 849 while No. 9 Virginia (853), No. 4 Texas (856), No. 40 San Diego (872) and Cal (873) rounded out the top five to book their trip to next week's national championship in Carlsbad, Calif.
Despite the disappointing ending, Santa Clara has nothing to hang their heads over. The team had tremendous success throughout the season with one team title, three individual titles, the best ranking at the end of the regular season in program history (45th), the program's third trip to an NCAA Regional and the best scoring average in program history (283.72) as just a few of their accolades to celebrate.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- The day began with teams closing out the final 5-6 holes of the second round. Santa Clara finished the round 7-over 295 to put themselves in 11th place ahead of the final round.
- The Broncos repeated with a 7-over 295 in the final round.
- As he did time after time throughout the season, J.P. Odland led the charge for the Broncos, finishing in a tie for 11th at 1-under 215. It was Odland's eighth top-20 finish of the season - tied for the fourth-most in program history in a single season.
- Odland could not have a much better start to his final round as he turned in four birdies on his first six holes to launch himself up the individual standings. The sophomore was as high as third individually before consecutive bogeys dropped him back down the board. He finished the round with five total birdies against four bogeys.
- Odland's 71 in the final round was his 20th round under par on the year, tied for the second-most in program history alongside 2010 WCC Player of the Year Scott Travers.
- Calder Overfelt had the second-best round of the day for the Broncos, turning in an even par to move into a tie for 47th alongside his freshman teammate Matt Robles at 10-over 226.
- Alvaro Muller (228) and Emil Nielsen (234) tied for 56th and 66th, respectively.
- Virginia's Paul Chang won medalist honors at 10-under 206 while Duke's Bryan Kim (210) was the top individual in the field not attached to one of the five advancing teams, securing a solo spot in next week's championship.
