CERES, Calif. — The Santa Clara University men's cross country team earned its second top-five team finish in as many races this season Saturday, placing fifth at the Kim Duyst Twilight, hosted by Stanislaus State at River Oaks Golf Course.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Kyle Berg was the Broncos' top finisher Saturday, grabbing a 13th-place individual showing with a time of 24 minutes, 8.6 seconds over the 8-kilometer course. Freshman Zafer Courcelle finished close behind Berg in 19th place in 24:24.8.
   
• Santa Clara's No. 3 through 8 runners packed extremely well, all finishing within 16 seconds of each other. Freshmen Will Carroll and Jack Kyle led the Broncos' chase pack, with Carroll placing 44th in 25:08.5, and Kyle finishing 49th in 25:13.3. Right behind them were seniors Daniel Trampe (58th, 25:19.0) and Daniel Vaca (59th, 25:20.2). And rounding out SCU's top-eight were underclassmen Kaden Helder in 62nd place (25:22.9) and Inbaa Chennai in 63rd (25:24.5).
   
• The Broncos avenged a defeat from two weeks ago at the hands of West Coast Conference rival San Francisco, beating the Dons who finished in 10th place Saturday. Santa Clara also beat NCAA Division I teams CSUN (6th), Sacramento State (8th), and Nevada (9th), as well as Division II West Region No. 6-ranked and host Stanislaus State, who finished seventh.

COMING UP

• Santa Clara takes a break for two weeks before splitting up its squad for two meets on Oct. 3. The team will travel to Chicago for the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola Chicago University, and the Pacific Invitational hosted by the WCC member Tigers in Lodi, Calif.
