SANTA CLARA, Calif. - It was a total team effort Thursday night as Santa Clara women's volleyball got their first victory of 2025 in a 3-1 win over Cal Baptist in their home opener at the Leavey Center. The Broncos squeaked out a 25-23 win in the first set before falling in the second set. A come-from-behind victory in the third set set the tone for a dominating 25-13 fourth set win to take the match 3-1.

Layla Truitt led the Broncos with 11 kills each and
Macy Hinshaw had a career high 42 assists, adding 11 digs for her second double-double of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Set one went back-and-forth until back-to-back points from Cal Baptist made it 12-9 Lancers, and later 16-11 after three straight. An ace from Cate Shanahan cut the Lancer lead to 17-16, and five straight points capped off by a kill from Morgan Hayes put the Broncos back on top 22-20. CBU tied it up at 22 and then 23, but the Broncos scored the final two points of the set after kills from Layla Truitt and Hayes.
- Cal Baptist (1-3) took an early 5-1 lead to open set two, and later 16-9 after three straight points. An ace from Gianna Perez made it 19-11, and the Lancers never looked back, scoring the last three points of the half to take set two 25-15.
- The Broncos (1-2) scored three straight points to open set three up 5-2, and an ace from Ashlynn Reilly capped a four point rally to go up 9-3. However, the Lancers refused to go away, cutting the lead to 12-10. A kill from Amy Veargason capped three straight points for the Broncos making it 21-17, but CBU rallied back again to cut the lead to 22-20.
- Four straight points for the Lancers made it 24-23, but a kill from Morgan Hayees tied it at 24, and back-to-back Bronco points capped off by a kill from Hayes gave SCU the set 26-24.
- The Broncos took a huge jump forward, scoring the first four points of set four capped off by another kill from Hayes. SCU kept the momentum rolling, scoring five more straight points, forcing the second timeout of the set from Cal Baptist.
- An ace from Selin Aslayan made it 10-1 in favor of the Broncos, and a kill from Cate Shanahan capped off six points in a row, 16-3. An ace from Lexi Trapani made it 20-7, and a kill from Hayes ended the set and gave the Broncos the 25-13 victory.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Two Broncos posted double figures in kills as Layla Truitt and Morgan Hayes had 11 each.
- Macy Hinshaw had her second double-double of the season posting a career high 42 assists to go along with 11 digs.
- Lexi Trapani led the team with 15 digs, her second game this season in double figures.
- The Broncos improve to 2-0 all time against Cal Baptist and have won their last three home openers under head coach Erin Lindsey.
