Broncos Fall to The Beach Despite Career Night From Shanahan

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's volleyball lost a heartbreaker to Long Beach State Friday in their second home game of 2025. The Broncos won the opening set 25-22 before falling in the next three sets. Cate Shanahan had a record breaking night recording a career high 18 kills, while Macy Hinshaw had her third double-double of the season with 40 assists and 10 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Long Beach State (1-3) jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but five straight points from the Broncos capped off by a kill from Cate Shanahan forced a Long Beach timeout. A kill from Selin Aslayan made it 13-10, and Shanahan again brought the hammer down, making it 16-13. The Beach tied it up at 18, but three straight Bronco points capped off by an ace from Macy Hinshaw made it 23-19. Kills from Layla Truitt and Shanahan gave the Broncos set one 25-22.
  • Long Beach scored five straight points to take a 9-3 lead forcing a Broncos timeout. An ace from Truitt cut the lead to 17-13, and a kill from Shanahan made it 18-17. However, that is as close as the Broncos would get as LBSU scored the final four points of the set to take set two, 25-19.
  • Set three went neck-and-neck until Long Beach scored five straight points to go up 19-15. The Beach scored four more straight to take a 23-16 advantage, then eventually took the set 25-18.
  • LBSU took a 7-4 lead in set four after a kill from Logan King, and later 11-7. Four straight Bronco points tied it at 12 after a kill from Morgan Hayes. LBSU answered with a six point rally to jump ahead 19-13. The Broncos battled back with three straight to cut the lead to 21-18, and three more made it 23-22 after a kill from Hayes, but LBSU scored the final two points to take the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Cate Shanahan had a career high 18 kills, besting her previous high of 13 set against Notre Dame in the season opener.

  • Lexi Trapani led the Broncos in digs for the fourth straight game this season with 16.
  • The Broncos fall to 4-5 all time over Long Beach State.
