SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Santa Clara men's basketball swept the West Coast Conference's players of the week awards for the week of Jan. 19 with
Christian Hammond being named the league's player of the week and
Allen Graves earning freshman of the week honors. It is the fourth and fifth weekly awards the Broncos have won this season.
A native of Denver, Colo., Hammond earned player of the week honors for the first time in his career. The redshirt sophomore averaged 21.5 points on 60 percent shooting to help the Broncos improve to 7-1 in conference play and remain undefeated at the Leavey Center with wins over Pacific and Saint Mary's. He also averaged 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 85.7 percent from the free throw line.
Hammond's week began with an 18-point night against Pacific on 7-of-10 shooting. He also logged a pair of steals and assists in the 85-69 victory. The guard was even better in the Broncos' 62-54 victory over Saint Mary's, scoring a game-high 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting to help lead SCU to their first win over the Gaels since Feb. 8, 2022. He was 9-for-10 at the charity stripe, including 4-for-4 inside the final minute to help put the game on ice, and also tallied five rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Hammond has eight 20-point games on the season, the most by a Bronco since
Adama-Alpha Bal had nine in 2023-24. His 25 points are tied with Vanderbilt's Duke Miles for the most an opposing player has scored on Saint Mary's defense this season.
Graves is the WCC's Freshman of the Week for the second time after averaging 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks. The Ponchatoula, La., product stuffed the stat sheet in the Pacific victory with 17 points (second-most on the season), eight rebounds, three blocks, three steals and a pair of assists. He reached double figure scoring yet again in the Saint Mary's victory, finishing with 11 points to go with a team-high eight rebounds.
Graves and the rest of the Broncos held the potent Saint Mary's offense to their lowest point total (54) and shooting percentage (31.6) on the season.
Santa Clara's five weekly award winners are the second-most in a single season in program history behind the 1984-85 campaign when Harold Keeling and Nick Vanos combined to win six player of the week honors.
Elijah Mahi was the league's
player of the week on Dec. 29, Graves won his
first freshman of the week honor on Dec.8 and
Sash Gavalyugov was
co-freshman of the week following his phenomenal 37-point effort against LMU last week.
The Broncos return to action Saturday, Jan. 24, at San Diego.
