Softball Squanders Early Lead in Series Finale Loss to Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. – Amanda Bricker homered for the go-ahead run as Pacific rallied from four runs down to defeat Santa Clara softball for the third straight game on Saturday at Bill Simoni Field.  The Tigers twice trailed by four runs, 4-0 and 5-1, but chipped away at the lead on 12 hits to complete the sweep of the Broncos.  SCU lost a West Coast Conference series for the first time in the last 12 series going back to April 19-21, 2024.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (22-22, 7-5 WCC) built a 5-1 lead through two and a half innings on an RBI base hit by Elle Merlino and a bases clearing three-RBI double Cairah Curran in the second and an RBI double by Caitlyn Golob in the third.  It was the first time the Broncos led all series.
  • Pacific (16-29, 4-8 WCC) cut into the Santa Clara lead with a pair of runs in the home half of the third on RBIs by Bricker and Kaylah Adams to make it 5-3.
  • Hazyl Gray came in relief to start the fourth with a two run lead but issued a walk to Jordan Hayes and a double to Olivia Silvestre.  Allie Capello ripped a triple to score both base runners to tie the game up at 5-all.
  • In the fifth, Bricker led off the inning with a solo homer to put the Tigers ahead 6-5.  Two batters later, Kaitlyn Maciel slugged another homer to left field to give the Tigers a two-run cushion.
  • Hayes added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to push the lead out to three, 8-5.
  • Eight of the nine starters in the lineup had at least one hit for Pacific led by Capello, Bricker and Maciel who had two hits each.
