SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the second time in program history, the Santa Clara men's tennis team received an NCAA Tournament bid after a historical regular season that saw them capture their first ever West Coast Conference co-championship. The Broncos will take on Auburn at the Baylor regional site in Waco, Texas on Friday, May 1. Other schools in the regional include Tulsa and No. 10 seed Baylor.
The last time Santa Clara made the NCAA Tournament was in 2012. This year, the 64-team, single-elimination tournament will start on Friday with the first and second round matches held at a minimum of 16 different regional sites, with four teams at each site.
Led by WCC Coach of the Year
Niall Angus, they earned one of the 37 at-large bids to the tournament with an overall record of 20-4 and tied for first in the WCC regular season. It included a 13 match win streak, the longest since at least 2001-02. In league play, Santa Clara had identical 6-1 records with Pepperdine and San Diego to qualify for the WCC Tournament for the eighth straight season.
In the WCC Tournament, the third seed Broncos won their opening round match against sixth seed Saint Mary's before falling to second seed Pepperdine in the semifinals.
The Broncos have been ranked nationally for 10-straight weeks and are currently No. 35, the highest mark since 2013 featuring four players that garnered All-WCC recognitions this season.
Luca Bluett and
John Kim earned doubles first team honors while
Alexander Watanabe Eriksson and
Luca Lemaitre were singles first team. Kim also was named singles second team while
Valentin Faure was singles honorable mention.
