Bal Helps Lead France To FIBA U20 European Championship Title

HERAKLION, Crete - Santa Clara men's basketball junior guard Adama Bal put a bow on his time at the 2023 FIBA U20 European Championships on Sunday, scoring nine points to go with four rebounds in France's 89-79 overtime victory in the title game. It's France's second title in the age division in history and first since 2010.

Bal, an incoming transfer to the Broncos by the way of the Arizona Wildcats, had an impressive seven-game stay in Crete, finishing with an average of 11.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. After a pair of relatively quiet games to open group play, the 6-foot-7 guard turned in 19 points against Iceland as the first of four-straight games with 10 points or more. Bal scored 11 points with four steals against Poland in the round of 16 and poured in 18 points against Serbia in the quarterfinals. He then scored 12 points in France's blowout victory over Greece in the semifinal that punched their ticket to Sunday's championship.

Bal wasn't the only Bronco in action at the U20 Championships. Redshirt freshman Jake Ensminger helped Germany to a sixth-place finish by averaging 5.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists. Ensminger tallied at least four rebounds in each game with a high of eight in the team's final two games vs. Lithuania and Serbia. His highest point total was seven, which he posted in three games, including the tournament opener against Bal and France. Ensminger was also credited with three or more assists in all but one game with a high of eight against Croatia.
