SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball will hit the road for the last time of 2023-24 on Thursday as they get set to take on the Portland Pilots inside the Chiles Center at 6 p.m. PT. The Broncos have won three of the last four games and are looking to finalize their seeding for the WCC Champioship Tournament. Santa Clara is currently in fourth place with a 9-5 record and are 18-11 overall.
Santa Clara most recently suffered a setback in Spokane against the high-scoring Gonzaga Bulldogs despite playing a solid offensive game of their own. The Broncos shot 46 percent and knocked down 11 treys, but ultimately couldn't off the Bulldogs, who shot 57 percent on their own and pulled ahead in the second half for a 94-81 win. Christoph Tilly scored a team-best 18 points and pulled down a season-high tying eight rebounds while Johnny O'Neil extended his double figure scoring streak to 10 with 16 points.
The Broncos out-rebounded the Zags 35-34 to extend their streak to 10 straight games in which they have won the battle of the boards. SCU has done so in all but one league game this season. Jake Ensminger ranks sixth in the WCC with 6.7 rebounds per game in league play while O'Neil is not far behind him at 10th with 6.4 boards per outing.
This will be the second meeting of the season between the Pilots and Broncos. In game one, Santa Clara knocked down 16 treys - tied for the fifth-most in program history - en route to a 101-86 victory in the Leavey Center. Tilly notched a career-high 22 points in the win.
Santa Clara leads the all-time series over the Pilots 74-33 and have won 16-straight entering Thursday's game.
The Pilots are 9-20 overall and 3-11 in league play at the start of the final week of the regular season. Led by Shantay Legans, Portland is averaging 71.8 points and 33.7 rebounds per contest. Individually, Tyler Robertson ranks third in the WCC with 16.1 points per game while Vukasin Masic and Tyler Harris also average in double figures with 12.7 and 12.1 points, respectively. Harris also leads the team with 7.3 boards per game. Portland leads the conference in 8.6 3-pointers per game.
