Baseball Secures Another Series Victory with Shutout of Pacific

Malcolm Williams went 2 for 4 with a two-run triple Friday at Pacific.
Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. — The pitching staff posted a second consecutive shutout and the offense saw six different hitters drive in runs, as the Santa Clara University baseball team clinched a West Coast Conference series victory Friday with an 8-0 win over Pacific at Klein Family Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Three Broncos pitchers combined to throw the team's fifth shutout of the season. Brandon Gomez, Cole Kitchen (4-3) and Blake Hammond each threw three shutout innings Gomez didn't allow a hit and struck out four, Kitchen scattered two hits with a strikeout in three frames, and Hammond struck out four while only allowing one hit in his three innings.

  • Three Broncos turned in multi-hit performances, led by Johnny Luetzow's career-high three knocks in four at-bats. Malcolm Williams hit a two-run triple in the seventh as part of his 2-for-4 night, and Dylan Joyce had an RBI single while going 2 for 4.

  • Like Thursday's series opener, Santa Clara (26-24, 12-11 WCC) broke a scoreless tie with the game's first run in the fifth inning. Payton Lambert's bloop single fell safely into left-center field, allowing Luetzow to score from second and make it 1-0. The Broncos added three more in the sixth thanks to two Pacific errors and RBI singles from Efrain Manzo and Joyce, pushing their lead to 4-0.

  • Coleman Brigman joined the RBI hit parade in the seventh with a single that made it 5-0. Williams' triple made it 7-0, and Luetzow knocked him in with a single to put SCU up, 8-0.

  • The Tigers' (10-44, 4-19 WCC) three hits included two doubles. But the first came in the fifth with two outs, and it was stranded. The second came to lead off the ninth, but two groundouts and a strikeout ended the game and gave the Broncos the shutout.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 5: The Broncos' fifth shutout of the year marks the most shutout victories they've had in a season in more than two decades. Santa Clara had six shutout wins during the 2003 season.
