SEASIDE, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf didn't let the foggy conditions bog them down on day two of the Saint Mary's Invitational. In fact, they excelled better than anyone else in the 16-team field, turning in an 8-under 280 in Tuesday's second round to shoot eight spots up the leader board into a tie for second alongside host-Saint Mary's. The Broncos' tally was five strokes better than anyone else in the field on the day and put the team 4-under 572 in total with only tomorrow's final round remaining.
Sophomore
Matt Robles was one of the biggest catalysts behind the boost as he turned in a 6-under 66 to climb 42 spots in the individual standings while senior
Calder Overfelt was 2-under 70 for the second-straight day. Both stand inside the top 10 of the standings.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Broncos tallied 18 birdies as a unit with Robles leading the charge with seven as part of his 6-under total. He finds himself tied for eighth at 3-under 141.
- Overfelt is a stroke ahead of Robles where he is tied for sixth at 4-under 140. He turned in five birdies in Tuesday's round.
- Kevin Hollomon buried an eagle on the par-5 18th hole as part of a 1-under 71 day. The Colgate transfer is 1-under 143 in total and tied for 14th.
- J.P. Odland and Max Margolis each improved a stroke from the first round, carding a 73 and 75, respectively. Odland sits just inside the top-40 in a tie for 37th at 4-over 148 while Margolis is tied for 58th at 7-over 151.
- Arkansas State shot 3-under on the day to hold tight to their spot atop the leader board where they have an eight-stroke advantage over the Broncos at 12-under 564. The Red Wolves' Thomas Schmidt holds the individual lead at 7-under 137.
