NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Santa Clara men's golf junior
J.P. Odland is tied for ninth place after turning in a pair of 1-under 69s at the par-70, 7,023-yard Warren Golf Course on the opening day of the Fighting Irish Classic. Odland is 2-under 138 after the first two rounds while the Broncos sit in 14th place as a team with 18 holes remaining on Tuesday.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Santa Clara improved 12 strokes from the first to second rounds. After turning in a collective 17-over 297, the Broncos bounced back in round No. 2 with a 7-over 285.
- Odland tallied eight total birdies for the day with four in each round.
- Calder Overfelt began the day 4-over 74 in the first round before finding his rhythm in the second round. The senior saw a four-stroke improvement with an even-par 70 in the second round to finish the day tied for 39th at 4-over 144.
- Sophomore Matt Robles also improved four strokes from the first to second round, finishing the day 8-over 76-72--148 to tie for 64th. Robles had a streak of four birdies over five holes on Nos. 14-18 in the second round.
- Freshman Tucker Sweeney and sophomore Emil Nielsen are tied for 76th at 12-over 152. Sweeney had the best hole of the day for the Broncos as he turned in an eagle on the par-5 No. 5 hole.
- North Carolina holds a three-stroke lead over UCLA at the top of the standings at 11-under 549. The Tar Heels also boast the current individual leader in Carson Bertagnole, who leads by four strokes at 9-under 131
