Broncos Upset No. 17 Washington for First Ranked Win in Program History

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.- Santa Clara women's beach volleyball had their first victory over a ranked opponent since head coach Jeff Alzina took over in 2022, defeating No. 17 Washington Sunday at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. However, the Broncos fell to San Jose State in the following match 3-2. Both the No. 3 and No.4 pairs of Alexandra Urbina/Ciara Cantlen and Callie Loughran/Teagan Wilson picked up wins in both matches, while Holland Jackson and Noelle Niederman delivered the final blow against the Huskies winning the final set 16-14.

The Broncos upset the No. 17 ranked Washington Huskies in their first matchup of the day for their first win over a ranked team in program history. After falling in the No. 1 pairing, Alexandra Urbina and Ciara Cantlen won 21-17, 21-19 in the No. 3 spot, and after falling in the No. 4 spot, the Broncos evened up the match with a win in the No. 4 spot by Callie Loughran and Teagan Wilson. Finally, in the last game of the match, Noelle Niederman and Holland Jackson fell in the first set 21-14, but battled back winning the next two sets 21-17, and 16-14, securing the victory for the Broncos.

The Broncos fell to San Jose State in the final match of the tournament. Urbina and Cantlen won their first matchup, then Wilson and Loughran put the Broncos up 2-0 with a sweep. However, then things took a turn for the worse as the Broncos lost the final three matches, falling to 1-1 on the day.
