Men's Cross Country Places Fourth at Season-Opening USF Invite

Inbaa Chennai led the Broncos' Friday with a 10th-place finish at the USF Invitational.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Santa Clara University men's cross country team posted three top-25 finishes Friday at the 32nd annual USF Invitational en route to a fourth-place team showing at the Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Inbaa Chennai led the Broncos individually, grabbing a top-10 finish with a 10th-place performance in 25 minutes, 3.6 seconds over the 8-kilometer course. Fellow underclassman Evan Charkut was among the top-15 in 13th place, running a time of 25:06.1. Senior Andrew Ho gave SCU three among the top-25 with a 22nd-place finish in 25:14.2.
Jack Kyle had an impressive collegiate cross country debut Friday, finishing as the Bronos' No. 4 runner in 53rd place with a time of 25:43.2. McCoy Brooks was right behind him in 59th place in 23:53.4 to round out the Broncos' scoring five.
James Ponzio (79th, 26:27.8) and Antonio Camacho-Bucks (83rd, 26:33.8) completed the Broncos' top-seven for the day. Newcomer James Estrella (98th, 26:50.4) and Nico Trepanier (99th, 26:50.9) finished right next to each other to put all nine of Santa Clara's competitors on the day inside the top-100 of a field that had over 150 runners.
The Broncos' fourth-place team finish with 129 points bested Stanford (5th, 135 points), Nevada (6th, 147) and West Coast Conference foes Pacific (8th, 200) and Saint Mary's (12th, 326).

COMING UP

The Broncos take a weekend off before traveling to the Central Valley on Sept. 13 for the Kim Duyst Invitational, hosted by Stanislaus State at River Oaks Golf Course.
