SEATTLE —The Santa Clara University men's track team rewrote its 3,000-meter records list in its season-opening competition, turning in three top-10 all-time marks and grabbing three top-10 finishes at the UW Preview, contested Friday and Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
Jack Tolbert made a late charge down the final stretch and nearly won his heat in the 3,000 on Friday, finishing second by only one hundredth of a second with a time of 8:05.25. That ranks as the No. 4 mark all-time in Santa Clara history.
Kyle Berg followed close behind, placing fourth in 8:12.13, the program's sixth-best all-time mark.
Liam Papavasiliou added a top-10 finish both in Friday's race and in the Broncos' record book by placing eighth in 8:15.90, the ninth-fastest indoor 3,000-meter time ran by a Bronco.
Papavasiliou and Berg also doubled back in the mile, placing 23rd (4:14.71) and 25th (4:15.91), respectively, while
Antonio Camacho-Bucks added a 31st-place finish in 4:17.26.
In the 1,000 meters,
Connor Rickey led the Broncos with a 15th-place finish, clocking 2:32.02, followed by
Coen Strub in 18th (2:34.63).
The Broncos will return to Seattle and Dempsey Indoor at the end of the month for the UW Invitational and "Mile City" event on Jan. 30 and 31.
