TUCSON, Ariz. - Santa Clara men's golf opened the spring season with a 10th place finish at the N.I.T. hosted by Arizona at the Omni National Tucson Resort, finishing the two-day event 2-under 289-291-282--862.
J.P. Odland led the way individually with a tie for 30th at 3-under 213.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Play was suspended in Monday's opening day of action due to darkness. The Broncos resumed the final few holes of the second round on Tuesday morning before diving straight into the final round.
- Santa Clara saved their best round for last with a 6-under 282 on the final 18 holes after turning in 4-over 580 through the first two rounds.
- Odland, who was recently named to the WCC's Preseason All-Conference team, tallied 13 total birdies over the three rounds. After starting things off with a 2-over 74, the Tiburon, Calif., product bounced back with a 4-under 68 in the second round that featured six birdies, and closed the event with a 1-under 71 in Tuesday's final round.
- Odland's two rounds under par pushed him up the school's career top-10 list into third place with 45 career rounds under par. He jumped over soon-to-be Santa Clara Athletics Hall of Famer Scott Travers (44).
- Matt Robles also finished under par for the event at 1-under 215 to tie for 37th. He totaled 10 birdies for the tournament and also sank an eagle on par-five No. 10 hole in the opening round. Robles' best round came in Tuesday's final 18 as he turned in a 2-under 70 with just one bogey.
- Like Odland, senior Calder Overfelt has logged two rounds under par, finishing 1-over 70-77-70--217 to tie for 45th. He tallied 12 birdies for the event with five in the first round alone before closing with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 1-3 in the final round.
- Overfelt, who entered the tournament with 39 career rounds under par, also moved up in the career standings into fourth place with 41 such rounds.
- Kevin Hollomon (4-over 220) and Tyler Gerace (7-over 223) each finished one-under par in the final round to finish tied for 54th and 61st, respectively.
- No. 5 Texas held off host-No. 30 Arizona for the team title, finishing one stroke better than the Wildcats at 41-under 823.
- Arizona's Filip Jakubcik won medalist honors at 14-under 67-68-67--202.
