LIHUE, Hawaii - Santa Clara men's golf shot 2-over 282 in Thursday's opening round of the John Burns Intercollegiate to put themselves in a tie for eighth and just four strokes outside of the top three of the day one standings. Senior Calder Overfelt led the way with a 2-under 68 where he is in an eight-way tie for sixth and just two shots off the lead at the par 70, 7,156-yard Ocean Course. 

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:

• The Broncos are tied with No. 22 San Diego State in eighth place and one stroke ahead of No. 23 Utah (283).
• SCU tallied 14 birdies as a team led by four from Overfelt.
• Overfelt was perfect on the front nine with birdies on Nos. 2 and 3. He also birdied Nos. 10 and 16 to counter two bogeys on the back nine. 
• Overfelt is two strokes behind Utah's Sergio Jimenez (66) for the individual lead. 
• Kevin Hollomon shot even par to finish the day tied for 21st. 
• Matt Robles was 1-over 71 and J.P. Odland was 3-over 73 to tie for 32nd and 58th, respectively. 
• LMU leads the field at 4-under 276 followed by No. 32 Texas A&M (277) and Long Beach State (278).
