SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball freshman phenom
Allen Graves once again has been named the West Coast Conference's Freshman of the Week. The forward earned a share of the award for the week of Feb. 9, alongside Portland's Joel Foxwell. Graves has now won the award four times this season, tying Brandin Podziemski's program record for the most weekly awards (player or freshman) in a single season.
Graves averaged 21.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists in Santa Clara's 2-0 road trip to help the Broncos extend their winning streak to eight, their longest since the 1994-95 campaign. The big man shot 58.3 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from the free throw line.
Graves opened the week with 12 points, eight rebounds and a season-best five steals to help Santa Clara hand Pacific its first home loss of the season with a 71-56 triumph in Stockton. The Ponchatoula, La., product followed up with a sensational performance in Pullman, Wash., with a season-high 30 points (10-14 FG) and season-high-tying 13 rebounds to go with two steals and four assists in the Broncos' 96-92 victory over Washington State. Graves was 9-of-10 at the charity stripe with his final two makes coming in the final minute to help secure the victory.
Graves' 30-point outing is the second-most points scored by a Bronco this season (37 by
Sash Gavalyugov) and the most by a freshman in a road game since Jared Brownridge in 2014. The double-double was his third of the season and second over the last three games. He has scored in double figures in 10 straight games and 18 times overall.
Graves has matched Podziemski's total from 2022-23 when the future first-round pick won WCC Player of the Week honors four times en route to eventually winning WCC Player of the Year honors. The Broncos have won a total of seven player/freshman of the week honors this season, breaking a tie with the 1984-85 team for the most in a single season in program history.
Graves and the Broncos will look to hold on to their No. 1 spot atop the WCC standings this week when they host Seattle on Wednesday, Feb. 11, and Gonzaga on Saturday, Feb. 14.
