Final Stats

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior forward Keith DeVey just keeps doing what he does best - scoring goals. The defending West Coast Conference co-Player of the Week scored twice to lead the Santa Clara University men's soccer team to a 4-0 win against Georgetown Sunday afternoon.

The fifth-ranked Santa Clara Broncos used three first half goals - including the brace from DeVey - to defeat the highly-regarded Hoyas 4-0 in the third game of the Maryland/adidas Classic at the University of Maryland's at Ludwig Field.

Santa Clara returns to action Friday with a local rivalry game against Stanford in a doubleheader with the women's team. The Bronco ladies face third-ranked UCLA in the opener at 5:30 p.m, followed by the 8 p.m. men's contest.

For their performances over the weekend, DeVey, Mehdi Ballouchy and Peter Lowry were named to the Maryland adidas Classic all-tournament team.

The Broncos (3-1-0) controlled the flow of play in the first half putting constant pressure on the Georgetown defense. Erik Ustruck got Santa Clara on the board first in the 29th minute on a give-and-go with Hector Guzman. Ustruck played to Guzman with his back to the goal who quickly distributed it back to Ustruck who buried the shot from just outside the box.

Just 43 seconds later, the Broncos struck again on a high cross from Mehdi Ballouchy that found the head of DeVey for the 2-0 lead. DeVey then gave Santa Clara the 3-0 lead as time was expiring in the first half on a 35-yard blast that curled into the net over the head of Georgetown keeper Andrew Keszler.

Santa Clara kept the pressure on in the second half, and Guzman notched his second assist on the afternoon after distributing the ball to Matt Hatzke down the left side of the box for the score in the 52nd minute. The Hoyas (3-1-0) were able to get chances in the second half, but Bronco keeper Christopher Moreo stopped three shots and Kevin Sweeney made another save to help preserve the shutout victory.

"On Friday, we let Maryland create too many chances and it really cost us," said head coach Cameron Rast. "Today we didn't give Georgetown many chances to score, particularly in the first 75 to 80 minutes of the match. We were fortunate to grab a quick goal really late in the first half to go up 3-0. That took a little pressure off. Erik opened it up for us, Keith had a couple of goals then Matt iced it.

"We are going to travel home tomorrow and have a really good idea of what we need to work on in order to continue to improve. We have played two top-five teams nationally in our first four games and come out with a 3-1 record. I'd say that's a pretty good start for us."
