No. 25 Santa Clara Controls Harvard During Scoreless Draw

Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite out-shooting Harvard 18-6 and holding a 13-2 edge in corner kick chances, 25th-ranked Santa Clara went scoreless and ended up tying the visiting Crimson 0-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium on Sunday.

It marked the second consecutive tie for Santa Clara (4-1-3), whose only loss came against No. 11 New Mexico on Sept. 4. SCU – the reigning West Coast Conference champions - will now prep to host their conference opener against Portland Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.

"I thought we dominated the game, controlled it, had most of the possessions," said Santa Clara senior goalkeeper Kevin Klasila, who posted his fourth shutout through eight games this season. "We had opportunities to score, but it was just one of those games where it didn't go in."

Santa Clara clearly dictated play through regulation, totaling 15 shots to Harvard's 1. Erik Hurtado led all players with six shots and Brandon Zimmerman had three. Wesley Culver also put a pair of shots on goal during a frustrating afternoon for the Broncos.

Harvard (2-4-1) - who lost at Stanford 1-0 Friday night - rallied in the second overtime session and threatened to steal away the game with a number of its best chances coming as time expired.

"Every single game (Harvard) has played in this year has been close," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast. "So we knew it was going to be a tough match. We knew we had to be sharp and if you really looked at what went on in the game; we had the bulk of the attack, we created the bulk of the chances, we had the moments to win the game but we weren't sharp."

"You can attribute our lack of sharpness to a number of things," added Rast, who was forced to change his lineup this week. The Broncos were short-handed in Thursday's tie at San Jose State, playing without Zimmerman and continue to go without the services of All-WCC forward Eric Masch and senior classmates David Castellanos and Connor Mitchell. Alex Fitschen missed Sunday's game with Harvard due to injury.

The Broncos now prep for a big WCC-opening weekend at Buck Shaw Stadium, hosting Portland Friday night, then Gonzaga Sunday afternoon.
