Men's Soccer Lose a Gut Wrencher in Double Overtime to Missouri State on Monday

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State's Josh Dolling recorded a hat trick, including the game-winner in double overtime to defeat Santa Clara men's soccer, 3-2, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the Monday night nonconference match.

Dolling scored two of his goals in the first half to put the Bears (3-0-2) up 2-0 heading to the half.  However, the Broncos (1-4) mounted a come back, getting a goal each from freshmen Sakari Carter and Julian Bravo to send the match to overtime.

In the first overtime, the Broncos were awarded a penalty kick with just three seconds remaining in the session, however, senior Andres Jimenez missed it wide giving life to the Bears.

"My heart feels for Andres.  He is crushed and feels a lot of responsibility, but it takes a brave young man to stand up and take the penalty kick.  He wanted to take it and I'm proud of him for wanting to take it," said Broncos head coach Cam Rast, who gives a group of three players the option on who takes the penalty kicks.

The Bears took advantage of the Broncos missed opportunity when Dolling netted the game-winner with less than three minutes left in the second overtime. Dylan De Jong sent a service from the left side and Dolling, having a half step on the Bronco defender inside the six, put his right foot on to find the back of the net to complete the hat trick.

"To concede the game-winning goal was equally disappointing as not winning it in the first overtime," said Rast.  "But this is on us to change it.  We do enough to put us in a position to win but we need to become stronger from it.  If we do, these results will go our way."

Missouri State raced to a 2-0 lead in the first half when Dolling scored in the 28th minute corralling a long pass just outside the 18 and chipped the ball over an on rushing Bronco goalkeeper Dakota Havlick.

The Bears added to its lead nine minutes later when Dolling chested down a Broncos defensive clearance attempt and volleyed a shot off the bounce from 25-yards out.  The ball was crushed in the upper right 90 for his second goal of the evening.

"We didn't play well in the first half.  We got caught not getting ourselves in good positions," said Rast.  "But I thought we challenged ourselves as by the end of the first half, we had decent moments.  That carried into the second half when we got a good early goal from Sakari that put us in a better spot."

Eight minutes into the second half, the Broncos scored on defenseman Sakari Carter's goal to make it 2-1.  The freshman was left unmarked on Javier Ruiz Duran's corner kick, one of 12 on the match, and headed home his first goal as a Bronco.

And in the 85th minute, another freshman Julian Bravo scored the equalizer for his first goal as a Bronco.  Bravo took a long diagonal pass from Emil Christensen inside the 18 on the left side, chested it down, chipped it over the defender and got around the defender to put his foot on the ball to squeeze it between the GK and near post.
