Beach Volleyball Splits on First Day of Stanford Invite

STANFORD, Calif.- Santa Clara women's beach volleyball split two matches on the first day of the Stanford Invite Friday at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium. The Broncos defeated UC Davis 3-2, then fell to the No. 3 ranked Cardinal 5-0.

The Broncos won their first three matches against the Aggies securing the victory early in their first matchup of day one. Sammy Wood and Teagan Wilson started things out with a 21-9, 21-18 victory, then Ciara Cantlen/Alexandra Urbina picked up the 21-13, 21-18 victory, and Ava Stoddard/Callie Loughran rounded out the Broncos victory 24-22, 21-16. The Broncos fell at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots, but were able to do enough in the earlier matches to secure the 3-2 victory.

The Broncos played a tough Cardinal team next and met their match going to three sets at the No. 3 spot with Alexandra Urbina and Ciara Cantlen, and pushing them to extra points at the No. 5 spot with Kawena Chillingworth and Hayley Hahn, but eventually fell 5-0 for the second time this season to the nationally ranked Cardinal.
