SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's soccer program announced the signing of Diego Diaz, an experienced transfer from Temple where he started in 13 of his 16 games last season, logging the second most minutes on the team.
Diaz joined the Broncos in the spring quarter and is available to compete this coming fall with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The center back from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico played the full 90 minutes in 11 of the last 12 matches and went on to be named CSC Academic All-District as well as the Philly Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18.
"While I could mention its proximity to home, the truth is that Santa Clara University represents much more to me," said Diaz. "When I hear the name Santa Clara, I feel a deep sense of pride in belonging to such a distinguished institution. Coming from Mexico, it has always been my dream to attend one of the best schools in the nation and I am proud to say I've achieved that dream. My goal is to contribute to the growth of the program while allowing the program, the school, and the community to shape and enrich every aspect of my life. I am confident that Santa Clara is the perfect place for my journey."
Diaz spent the 2023 season at Penn State where he appeared in two matches.
At the club level, Diaz spent seven seasons at several levels in the Chivas organization in Guadalajara including the Chivas clausura 2021 as the Liga Mexico u17 winner.
"We are very excited to sign Diego to play for us here at Santa Clara. He is a talented defender and one we expect to fight to be on the field this Fall. He has been to a couple places and gained some good experience in that time. Based on what we have seen, that should help him adapt quickly and impact our group with maturity and ability as soon as he steps on the field for us," said Broncos head coach Cam Rast.
