Brandi Chastain helped lead the Bronco women’s soccer team to its first postseason in 1989 and two national semifinals in her two seasons at Santa Clara. In 1990, she scored 22 goals and 50 points as the Broncos recorded an 18-1-1 record and the nation's top ranking. Chastain was named the ISAA National Collegiate Player of the Year, an All-American, and was among the nation's leading goal scorers. She went on to play for 12 years with the US Women’s National Team, winning an Olympic Gold medal in 1996, and two FIFA World Cups in 1991 and 1999. Her most iconic moment came in 1999 when she scored the decisive penalty kick to win the FIFA World Cup against China, removing her jersey in one of the most famous goal celebrations in women’s soccer history. She has since returned to Santa Clara as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the Women’s soccer team.
