Formico was nicknamed “The Splendid Splinter” after an incredible punt return against San Jose State in 1949. His punt brought the Broncos back from a 13-7 deficit to beat the Spartans by one point. That moment was the start of something special. The victory was the start of a six game winning streak and earned the Broncos a bid to the Orange Bowl. Formico and the Broncos crushed the University of Kentucky 21-13 in one of the biggest upsets in school history.
