Before Santa Clara, Slavich was known for his athleticism all around the bay area.  He was named to the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame and given the Tom Rice Award for Athletic Achievement and Service to sports. At Santa Clara, Slavich was collegiate All-star in both basketball and football. He was on the 1932 All-Coast Team because of his ability to catch anything. He was so good at catching he earned the nickname, “Hands”. After graduation, Slavich played for the Olympic Club basketball team. He was inducted into Santa Clara’s Hall of Fame in 1956.
