Dick Garibaldi coached one of the greatest basketball teams in Santa Clara history. Even before his coaching days, Garibaldi had a successful playing career for the Broncos. He went to an NCAA Final Four in 1952 and the Elite Eight in 1953 and 1954. As head coach he earned a 137–77 overall winning record and a 2nd overall spot in the AP poll. His team also appeared in the 1967 and 1969 NCAA Tournaments. Additionally, Garibaldi’s men compiled a 73–12 record in the three-year period of 1967-1970. This includes a school-leading 21 game winning streak. For his efforts, Garibaldi earned 3 WCC Coach of the Year awards, 3 Northern California Coach of the Year awards, and was inducted into the Santa Clara Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969. Three of his players were drafted into the NBA, including NBA Champion Dennis Awtrey.
