James Barlow was a crucial player in the 1938 Sugar Bowl game. Barlow played halfback, punter, and even threw the pigskin a time or two. Barlow came off the bench in the 1938 Sugar Bowl against LSU as a game changing punter. Ultimately, the Broncos won the match-up after executing a trick play that was set up by Barlow. After graduation, he served in WWII with the U.S. Army Air Corp then flew with the U.S. Air Force until 1969 logging 13,000 flight hours.
